Disney 3D

I thought 3D movies were on their way out. I thought people were getting sick and tired of 3D because it was so over played. Well, for some reason Disney seems to be capitalizing on 3D movies. They plan on bringing back The Little Mermaid, Monsters Inc, Beauty and the Beast, and Finding Nemo. I guess Lion King 3D has been so popular that they're hoping for success with these movies. Honestly, I love these movies, but I have absolutely no desire to see any of them in 3D. Maybe Finding Nemo, but even then, not so much. Has Disney lost the ability to come up with other movies? Tangled was really good so there has to be more movie magic in there somewhere. Why go back to old movies and bring them out in 3D? I'm disappointed.

Good Friday

Just when we thought we were free of 3D movies, 4D theatres are being built. I keep reading that fewer and fewer 3D movies are being made because people just aren’t seeing them anymore. People are tired of them. So then why the hell would you go out and make a bunch of 4D movie theatres outside of a theme park. It’s fun and cool in a theme park when you’re watching animatronic characters, but not when you’re watching a real movie. I would not want to be watching Transformers in a 4D theatre. I don’t want to feel the explosions or feel water falling on my face. That’s just too intense. I can handle it at a theme park for a 15 minute show, but that’s as much as my sensory over load can handle. There’s a 4D theatre ready to open late August somewhere in LA. I didn’t get the details on where, but trust that I will never go there. It might be cool and fun for one movie, but I doubt people would go back for that. Maybe I’m wrong and I have no idea how the world works, but knowing how sick people are of 3D doesn’t make me confident that they would be interested in 4D. Am I alone here?

3-D Gatsby

I’m sure we’ve all read The Great Gatsby at some point in our high school career, right? I remember having to read it in AP English and I honestly only remember reading the words and retaining nothing. I think I was busy with other stuff and only read it because I had to. I should probably go back and read it again or at least read a synopsis so I can remember the jest of the story. I also remember one girl I was friends with leaning over in Trig class and telling me I reminded her of the The Great Gatsby because I was mysterious. It made me laugh then and it makes me laugh a little now. I think I’m pretty open…

Anyway, Baz Luhrmann will be directing a new film version of the book with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. Interesting cast. Interesting director. I can see this movie being pretty good, actually. The only thing is that he might make it in 3-D. That’s Baz for ya. He always takes simple things and turns them into something more. I kind of like that about him. Although, I’m pretty sick of 3-D. Over the weekend I was at Barnes and Noble and I over heard this one mother telling her daughter she was sick of 3-D and was hoping it was on the outs. Glad to know I’m not alone on that one.

Either way, I would totally see this movie, 3-D or not. Like I said, Baz has a very interesting way of making movies and they’re usually amazing. I can only imagine he can make this movie pretty good.

See Saw

I freaking love Halloween. I’m a Halloween junky, which I find hilarious because I’m the biggest scaredy cat you will ever meet. My mom had to buy me a dream catcher because I used to have horrible nightmares and I would run into my parent’s room screaming. See? Scaredy cat. Horror movies are iffy. Some I can watch and be totally fine with and some I need to watch during the day followed by a Disney movie to ease the adrenaline. Like Quarantine for example. I saw that in the theatres opening day and that was a huge mistake. I was terrified for months. I’m still kind of terrified. But movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer are a breeze. Guys with hooks for hands and guys with masks, no big deal. Then, there are movie likes Saw. I can watch Saw, but I’m also scared of it. I can watch it because I don’t have a queasy stomach and the gore doesn’t bother me, but I’m scared to be in the dark because someone with a pig mask might jump out and get me and then I’ll wake up in a torture device I need to find my way out of. So, one part of me is scared because stuff like that could really happen, but I also think the movies are very well written and just kind of brilliant. Whoever came up with all the torture devices and the story behind the whole thing is kind of brilliant.

Saw, was just named the most successful horror movie of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records. When they say most successful, they’re talking about making the most money. So far, there have been 6 movies that have come out every Halloween since 2004 and number 7 will be the final movie and it will be released October 2010 in 3D. Count me out!!! Oh hell no. Can you imagine what my nightmares will be like then? Honestly, though a 3D horror movie is brilliant. That movie will bring in a lot of people. 3D is obviously popular and so are the Saw movies, so why not mash them together. Brilliant! If only I could come up with something like that. Did I mention it’s brilliant?

I’ve seen Saw 1-4 and I want to watch the rest just to see what happens so I will have to wait for the final movie to come out on DVD so I don’t have to watch it in 3D or in the theatres. For some reason horror movies are always scarier when watched in movie theatres. Luckily, I’ve only seen the Saw movies in the comfort of my home surrounded by pillows.

Weekend Movie - Despicable Me

I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend. There weren't many movies out that were worth seeing except Despicable Me and even then I was a little hesitant to see it. I'm not the biggest fan of Steven Carell or 3D and they have pushed the movie so much that I was scared it was just going to be awful. Normally, movies that have commercials everywhere including on the side of every single bus tend to suck, but I have to say this was an exception. Steve Carell wasn't annoying at all and the movie was uber cute. Yes, uber. I think the reason Steve Carell wasn't too annoying was because number one I couldn't see his face and number two because he put on a thick Russian accent so it was almost as if it wasn't even him. But in all seriousness, he did a very good job. His character has these little yellow people he calls minions and I could eat them they're so cute and this little girl he adopts is even cuter. Ugh. So much cute!!! If you're looking to puke rainbows and hearts of cuteness everywhere, I recommend this movie. You will be wanting to see it again and again.

Weekend Movie - Toy Story 3

Sigh. I love Pixar. They always have the best ideas and the best pre-movie cartoons. Pretty much every Pixar movie is worth watching over and over. They never get old or boring. If their office wasn't so far away, I would work for them. They definitely have some sort of magic yogurt that they consume that allows them to make such amazing movies and Toy Story 3 is no different. It was getting great reviews, so my friends and I saw it at the El Capitan in RealD 3D, which is just a projector in case you wonder what the difference is.

The opening cartoon is called Night and Day and is just super clever. I won't give too much away, but it's basically about facing the unknown and not being so afraid of it. Everything unknown soon becomes known and comfortable. It's cute with a good message. The movie itself is very clever as well with a lot of feeling and passion. I know that may spark gag reflexes, but it's true. Towards the end, I could have cried if I wasn't trying really hard not to. Andy is going off to college and packing up his room and towards the end, the mom walks into the room and sees that it's empty and starts to cry and I could have lost it right then and there. It doesn't help that I'm moving out of my parents house soon, but it's just so endearing. Andy also gives his favorite toys to a little girl who would actually play with them instead of keep them in a box in the attic and I could have cried at that scene too. Andy is happy to give his toys away to someone who would play with them, but he's also sad because he's basically giving up his childhood.

All I have to say is that I'm never giving away any toy with a face ever again after this movie. See it. It's really good.

3D Overload

This 3D business has gotten way out of control. Every single movie is 3D now, they introduced a 3D TV, and they even have 3D chalk for kids. I’ll have to admit, the chalk is cool, but we already live in a 3D world. The need for 3D everything is a little overwhelming. My coworkers and I were having a conversation yesterday about 3D and how ridiculous it’s become. One guy said he even saw 3D toothpaste. Isn’t toothpaste 3D already…? I’m confused. Actually, I argue that toothpaste is 4D because we can taste it and feel it. Anyway, this morning KROQ was discussing 3D porn. Wow. 3D porn. That’s insane. I mean I guess it makes sense because you want the people to seem real, but that would be creepy to me. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it. One chick even claims she got pregnant by watching 3D porn while her husband was away in Iraq. This makes me laugh. Talk about a lame excuse. I'm pretty sure this is not how 3D works. Sorry for the annoying guy in the video, but he gives the best description.

James Cameron Saves the World

Avatar 2? Let’s bet on this. I bet there’s going to be at least 3 Avatar movies each talking about a new part of the environment that needs saving from the mean white people. The first movie made so much money that they will more than likely be making quite a few. Avatar was not only the highest grossing movie when it was in theatres, but it also sold the most DVD’s ever. It’s rumored that the movie will even be re-released in theatres to make even more money. Oy vey. It wasn’t even that great. Yeah, it had amazing CG and what not, but it got a little too political for me.

Avatar 2 is supposed to focus on the ocean. I wasn’t kidding about an Avatar 2 coming out. Since the first movie took 10 years to make, Avatar 2 may not come out for a while. I just hope they don’t pump it out quickly and make it sloppy so they can make money. I hope they take their time and do it right. Maybe it will be the next Lord of the Rings where a new movie comes out each year.

CG Magic

So last night I joined the herd and saw Avatar in 3D at the Arclight Cinerama Dome. Those glasses are some serious business. I felt like we were on an actual mission to space. The glasses were pretty heavy on my face so after a while I got a headache, but otherwise the 3D experience wasn’t too bad. It’s like reading subtitles. After a while you don’t even realize you’re doing it anymore. I used to be very against 3D movies, but not so much anymore.

The movie wasn’t what I expected at all, but I liked it. I’m not sure what I expected, but this was not it. I’m sure everyone has seen it by now so I probably won’t be ruining it if I talk about the plot. Basically, people are transported into avatar bodies where they can breathe different air and do things humans can’t normally do. You know, the usual. The movie was very political. It was all save the world, hate Bush. If at first you weren’t sure if it was political, they let you know by saying things like, “let’s fight terror with terror” and “it looks like they are doing some shock and awe mission.” How much more political can you get and not even that, how much more Bush hating can you get? I didn’t mind and neither did the people around me. I heard a lot of giggling during those lines. Way to go Bush! No we have a movie showing how much you sucked. It was a fight between those who want to save the planet and humans and those who don’t care and want it all destroyed. The Bush administration in a nut shell.

The CG in this movie was freaking stunning. I am such a hater of people who try and don’t succeed when it comes to CG, but this movie definitely succeeded. Next time I see poorly done CG I am going to proclaim they have no excuse because Avatar was able to do it flawlessly. I look at movies like the recent Indiana Jones for example where the camera pans up to show a chase scene and the CG is just obvious and terrible. This one has none of that. There was no inkling whatsoever to show that this was CG with live action. It all pretty much looked like it was live action. Very well done. If you have no other reason to see this movie, see it for its CG beauty.

Glasses for Life

Oh that NPR channel. So this morning, NPR was discussing 3D movies and how every freaking movie is using the technology and my heart broke. I hate hate hate 3D. Everyone I know hates 3D. It’s annoying to wear stupid plastic glasses for 2 hours. The technology gives everyone a headache. It basically ruins the movie. I don’t see the need for objects seemingly flying at my face. It doesn’t appeal to me it just makes me feel like my personal space is being invaded. A lot. I have seen a few 3D movies and many because I had no choice. When I went to see the movie Coraline, my friends and I went out of our way to find a theatre that didn’t have 3D and it ended up being in 3D anyway. Even the DVD for the movie is in 3D. We even had to go all the way to Ventura to see Up in 2D. That is dedication. Well, we were on vacation and happened to see a 2D version and jumped at the chance. Anyway, we hate 3D. It sucks.

So NPR was saying that 3D is the new best thing and every movie is going to be 3D. Why?!?! Every time my friends and I see a preview for a movie that we want to see, the end says “coming in 3D” and we all groan. They are ruining movies!!! Turns out that 3D is so popular in the movie theatres and in video games that they are going to make TV 3D. Oh hell no. I will move to the mountains and become a hermit if that happens. 3D TV is being tested right now and certain devices are already for sale to make your living room a 3D palace of barf. What is the world coming to?!?!
